That night I stayed with Auntie D, Jane’s auntie. I am sure she had a proper name, but she insisted on being called Auntie D by everyone. Chris had told me ‘She’s a little eccentric’, and indeed she was. She lived in an old cottage outside a village. Inside, the rooms were cluttered. I was not sure how old she was, but although getting on she still had a sharp mind and was physically fit. I learned that she was compiling a history of the village at the time. It seems that she had several adopted children. The son of one of them came over that evening with his family. They were all so bright, kind and cheerful. (from "Against the Wind" - Poolbeg Press)
