As evening fell I at last came to a decent-sized cafe. Going
into the kitchen and pointing out some potatoes to a young
man, he went and fetched more from somewhere at the back.
“Have them,” he said. He then got five onions from the
storehouse next door, and some carrots. “Have these too.”
We had a group photo with a young Tajik man doing
seasonal work and the rest of the family. I loved the simple
ethnic jacket the wife quickly put on for the picture.
